About the Scottish Highlands
The Scottish Highlands is an area that until recently remain unchanged from the traditional Scotland of the movies. The main language spoken was Gaelic, an ancient language used for centuries. Recently, the area has become a bit more like the Scottish Lowlands with more tourism, but you can still find areas that will take you back to a different time in the Scottish Highlands.
The area traditionally includes the mountainous region of Scotland though no real distinction exists as to its exact boundaries. Sparsely populated, the area is one of the least populated in Europe.
Loch Ness A Classic Vacation in the Scottish Highlands
The Scottish Highlands are probably the most well known for Loch Ness. This is a deep freshwater loch 23 miles from Inverness and home to the legendary Loch Ness Monster. Over 700 feet deep it contains more fresh water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined. “The Loch Ness Exhibition Center” in Drumnadrochit focuses on the history and controversy of the Loch and offers tours of the loch for the Nessie watchers. Also Nearby is Urquhart Castle, one of the strongholds in medieval Scotland. Mostly destroyed now, people are still welcome to come and see some amazing history of the area. If you are a lighthouse visitor, there are two wonderful examples of traditional Scottish lighthouses on the loch.
