The largest US state by area, Alaska is the least densely populated state with a population of less than 750,000 people. Until 1867, Alaska was actually part of Russia and it wasn’t until 1912 that it became a U.S. Territory and was adopted as the 49th State in 1959. Known as Alyeska or the Great Land the native peoples are Native American Groups from Athabascan and its subcultures to the more well known Inuits and Aleut and many more.

There are many creative and wonderful ways to explore Alaska including ferry’s, cruises, railway, car and even dog sled. Many tour companies offer their services to vacationers in search of new and more interesting ways to see Alaska. Float planes are used by many of the companies and locals as well to get around in this true wilderness where roads do not always exist. Guided tours, often beginning in Juneau, Alaska’s Capital City, showcase such sites as the historical areas of Juneau with museum tours and a variety of cultural experiences. Many will then either hop in a plane, helicopter and even grab a dog sled and head out to one of the many amazing natural wonders such as the Mendenhall Glacier.

Glacier Adventures in Alaska

Outrigger Vacation Club encourages you to see the sites that make Alaska so amazing, wonders of the world, so to speak, abound in the wilds of Alaska. The Mendenhall Glacier is located just 12 miles from Juneau and is home the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center which is open year round. It teaches visitors about the local wildlife including mountain goats, wolves, bears and salmon plus much more. Elevated boardwalks allow safe and low impact travel, allowing the visitor to get within a quarter mile of the glacier itself. If you are more adventurous, you can hike up the West Glacier Trail which will take you on to the Glacier itself. Guides, wildlife and a true wilderness await you at Mendenhall Glacier.

Alaska Railway Travel and Cruises

As a travel club, Outrigger Vacation Club knows that not all vacationers to Alaska desire to hike through the wilderness, but prefer to travel in a bit more comfort. The Alaskan Railway is vast and wonderful and allows the visitor a chance to see all the wonders of Alaska from the comfort and warmth of a train through the wilderness. The rail has served as an important mode of transportation for decades. It once brought many men to the Yukon and Klondike in search of gold. Now it offers the visitor a chance to see otherwise inaccessible areas in this great state. You are even allowed at times to disembark for a day of fishing or sightseeing in some of the most famous places in Alaska.

Cruises in Alaska are another very popular form of sightseeing. Whale watching, drifting past the glaciers, there are many options for the perfect cruise vacation. Day cruises to popular destinations including National Parks, Fjords, and Prince William Sound are easily available during the tourist season. See wildlife, wilderness and beauty on a cruise through Alaska.

Outrigger Vacation Club welcomes the adventure traveler, and those interested in a warmer, more reserved Alaskan Vacation to celebrate 50 years of Alaska with them. Enjoy all the natural beauty and splendor on your own Alaskan Adventure.
